Keep the fire burning! Blak, Loud and Proud
National NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair, Steven Satour said this year’s theme enables Indigenous peoples in the 21st century.
“The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“‘Blak, Loud, and Proud’ encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage and assert our place in the modern world,” Mr Satour said.
“This theme calls for a reclamation of our narratives, an amplification of our voices, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equality.”
NAIDOC Week, held nationwide on 7-14 July 2024, is Australia’s annual celebration which recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair, Aunty Lynette Riley said this year’s theme is a clarion call to continued unity and solidarity for all Australians to come together and celebrate.
“The resilience of mob, our shared experiences, collective memories and kinship is a source of tremendous pride,” Dr Riley said.
“We honour the flame of the fire, kindling the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.”
On the 9th July, NAIDOC Awards were held at FMG Eliwana where two McKay Drilling employees from our MKY006 crew were nominated for ‘The Empowering Generational Change’ Award. Well Done, Aaryn Koia and Morgan Tyler on your nominations.
Although both missed out on receiving the award, the recognition from the Resource Definition Team who work closely with the crew is something to be incredibly proud of. Standing out for positive change is to be celebrated.
NAIDOC Week will continue to be recognised in August at McKay Drilling when we team up with the Clontarf Foundation Boys to battle it out in a Table Tennis Competition. McKay Drilling are proud to continue to build and support the boys at Clontarf who are also empowering generational change. Over the years we have enjoyed participating in many Clontarf Sporting events, our upcoming Table Tennis competition will be the first held at our Wangara Workshop. We will be sure to update our socials with all the action and competition results so keep a look out for that!
